Travel trends are shifting—and one of the most exciting changes is the rise of women choosing to explore the world on their own terms.
Instead of waiting for friends or family to align schedules or share the same travel dreams, more women are booking solo adventures. It’s about freedom, discovery, and experiences that feel truly personal.
The numbers behind the movement
Specialist operator Jules Verne, part of DERTOUR UK, reports that solo travellers now make up 46% of its bookings for next year—up from 40% in 2023. Nearly 70% of those solo travellers are women.
But this isn’t about wanting to be alone. As Jules Verne’s managing director Debbie O’Neill explains, “Many of our guests have busy lives filled with family and friends, but they also value the freedom to explore in their own way.” Small group tours offer the perfect balance—shared experiences with like-minded travellers and the space to follow your own curiosity.
Adventure as empowerment
For some, travelling solo is a quiet act of courage—a chance to step outside the familiar and discover something new, both in the world and within themselves. Popular destinations range from European favourites like Spain and Portugal to more exotic escapes in Egypt, India, and Uzbekistan.
Explore Worldwide, another DERTOUR UK brand, has seen a similar trend, with solo bookings up 22% compared to last year. September and October are peak months for these trips, thanks to lower prices and fewer crowds.
Managing director Michael Edwards sums it up: “Solo travel is no longer niche—it’s a growing movement. People are less inclined to wait and more inclined to seize the day.”
Confidence, connection, and curiosity
Research shows that solo travellers often return feeling more confident, empowered, and inspired. It’s not just about the destination—it’s about rediscovering a love for travel and the joy of doing it your way.

Our colleague Rachel O’Reilly, Director of Communications at DERTOUR UK, joined travel expert Simon Calder on the Independent Travel Podcast to discuss the latest trends shaping the future of travel. During the episode, Rachel shared insights on how solo travel is evolving, what motivates today’s travellers, and what to expect in 2026. You can listen to the episode here.
